16.9% of Population Aged 20+ Play on Course
Average Monthly Spending on Golf Courses 458,000 Won
Last year, the number of people who engaged in golf activities at least once was 6.24 million, accounting for 16.9% of the population aged 20 and over in South Korea.
The Korea Golf Association announced the 2023 Korea Golf Index on the 9th, based on a survey of 10,000 adult men and women aged 20 to 70 across 17 cities and provinces nationwide. The survey examined the number of participants in domestic golf activities, types of activities, attitudes toward golf, and the degree of attachment to golf activities. According to the report, 6.24 million people had golf activity experience at least once last year.
The participation types were 88.9% on-course, 8.4% off-course, and 2.7% indoor screen golf. Here, on-course refers to those who necessarily used golf courses, off-course refers to those who did not use golf courses but necessarily used golf practice ranges and also used indoor screen golf, and indoor screen refers to groups who only necessarily used indoor screen golf. The number of on-course participants who actually used golf courses last year was 5.55 million, a 15% increase compared to 2021.
The average monthly expenditure per person on golf in 2023 was 458,000 KRW for golf courses, 229,000 KRW for golf practice ranges, and 176,000 KRW for indoor screen golf. Regarding overseas golf activities, 65.8% of respondents among last year’s golf activity participants reported having experience with foreign golf activities. The countries visited for foreign golf activities were Thailand (42.1%), the Philippines (32.2%), Vietnam (28.0%), Japan (26.1%), and China (14.3%) in that order.
