Coin Made at US San Francisco Mint
Missing 'S' Mark by Mistake... Has Rare Value
Sisters "Mother Bought It in 1978"
The story of sisters who were able to earn hundreds of thousands of dollars from inherited 10-cent coins has been revealed.
According to ABC News on the 8th (local time), three sisters living in Ohio, USA, inherited 10-cent coins that their parents had kept in a bank vault for over 40 years. Until a few years ago, they did not know the value of these coins, but Ian Russell, CEO of the online auction house Great Collections, stated, "The winning bid for these coins could exceed $500,000 (670 million KRW)."
The coins, featuring President Franklin Roosevelt, were considered very rare among collectors. In 1975, the San Francisco Mint produced over 2.8 million special coin sets and sold them for $7 each, but by mistake, the mint mark 'S' was not stamped on two of the 10-cent coins. Since there are only two such coins in the world, they are extremely rare, and their value surged as collectors became aware of their existence.
One of the coins was sold at auction in 2019 for $456,000 and was resold to a private collector a few months later. Coin collectors knew about the existence of this coin, but it had not been found since the late 1970s, so its whereabouts were unknown. Russell explained, "This coin had not appeared for decades," adding, "Most collectors and dealers have never seen this coin."
The three sisters, who requested anonymity, told Russell that they inherited the coins after their brother's recent death and that their mother had bought the coins discovered in 1978 for $18,200. Their parents, who were engaged in dairy farming, purchased the coins as an investment, anticipating their future value. The sisters said, "Our brother often talked about these coins, but until last year, we had never seen them ourselves." Russell added, "The coins without the 'S' mark will be exhibited at a coin fair held in Florida," and "The auction is scheduled to close in October."
