The 61st Jeonbuk Residents Sports Festival Concludes... Overall Victory Goes to 'Jeonju City'

Over 25,000 Participants from 14 Cities and Counties

The 61st Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province Residents Sports Festival concluded its intense three-day competition across Sunchang-gun and successfully wrapped up with the closing ceremony held on the 8th at the Sunchang National Sports Center.


This event was held under the slogan "In Sunchang, Embracing Happiness, Opening a Special Self-Governing Province Together." It became a meaningful festival fostering harmony and unity among the 14 cities and counties of Jeonbuk.

The competition took place over three days from the 6th to the 8th throughout Sunchang-gun, with over 25,000 athletes, officials, and numerous spectators from the 14 cities and counties participating to strengthen regional harmony and friendship.


Fierce contests were held across a total of 39 events (37 official, 2 demonstration). In major sports such as athletics, swimming, soccer, and taekwondo, new records were set and exciting matches captivated the audience’s attention.


At the closing ceremony held on the 8th at the National Sports Center, highlights of the competition were screened, results were announced, the overall awards ceremony was conducted, closing remarks and a general review of the event were given, the next host city was announced, the tournament flag was handed over, and cultural and artistic performances took place.


In the overall awards ceremony, Jeonju City took first place and received the prestigious championship flag. Iksan City followed in second place, and Gunsan City came in third. The host city, Sunchang-gun, finished in fourth place, concluding the event.

Additionally, the influx of athletes and spectators visiting Sunchang-gun during the event brought vitality to the local economy.


A Sunchang-gun official stated, "The direct economic impact from this event is estimated to be about 1.6 billion KRW," adding, "In particular, sales in service sectors such as lodging and restaurants showed significant increases."


Choi Young-il, the mayor of Sunchang-gun, expressed, "I sincerely thank the officials and volunteers who participated in the event, as well as all the athletes and visitors who came to Sunchang during the competition," and added, "We will do our best to promote the development of sports and revitalize the local economy in Sunchang-gun based on this experience."
