In Japan, a form of acupuncture that uses a large number of needles on the face and chest is becoming popular.

Recently, Hong Kong's South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported that Japanese celebrities are receiving acupuncture treatments based on traditional Chinese medicine, where needles are inserted along the body's meridian points. This acupuncture treatment lasts for at least 30 minutes and is known to cost as much as 200,000 yen (approximately 1.86 million KRW).

Japanese actor Kubota Masataka posted a photo on his social media last month showing himself receiving this type of acupuncture. The photo showed Kubota lying on a bed with needles densely inserted into his forehead and chest. Kubota explained, "After becoming interested in health, I had a unique experience," adding, "I felt a thrill from the first treatment that pushed me to my soul." However, Instagram classified Kubota's photo as 'sensitive content.'

Not only Kubota, but also actress Kumagai Mami, singer Ko Hiromi, and gymnast Nishioka Ryusei are reported to have received similar acupuncture treatments. Table tennis player Furuhara Ai shared a photo of needles inserted into the back of her head, adding, "There are scarier things, but I didn’t want to surprise anyone, so I didn’t post them."

The acupuncturist Shirakawa, who performed the treatment on Kubota, claimed, "This kind of treatment not only cures diseases but also helps visitors' spiritual improvement, turning misfortune into good luck." Netizens who saw this reacted with comments such as "Isn't this a cult?", "The areas where the needles were inserted are too red," "A true master achieves maximum effect with minimal needles," "Looks like a hedgehog," and "You have to be careful because the face has many nerves."
