Super Typhoon 'Yagi' made landfall twice on the Chinese mainland, causing numerous casualties.
According to local media including China Central Television (CCTV) on the 7th, Yagi first made landfall around 4:20 PM the previous day on the coast of Wenchang City, Hainan Island in southern China, and then again around 10:20 PM the same day in Xuwen County, Guangdong Province. The wind speed at the center of Yagi exceeded 200 km/h, disrupting transportation in the area and leading to school closures. Approximately 420,000 residents in Hainan Province and 574,000 residents in Guangdong Province were urgently evacuated.
Yagi caused at least 2 deaths and 92 injuries in Hainan alone. Local Chinese media posted numerous photos and videos showing parked vehicles overturned and rolling three times due to the typhoon, as well as shattered glass windows of apartments and commercial buildings. One video showed a woman walking with a child slipping and sliding on the street, unable to withstand the strong winds. Street trees were uprooted as well.
Chinese meteorological authorities forecast that Yagi would make a third landfall on the afternoon of the same day at Fangchenggang in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, on the northern coast of Vietnam, urging caution. The Chinese central government allocated a budget of 200 million yuan (approximately 37.76 billion KRW) to support recovery efforts in Hainan and Guangdong provinces.
Yagi is expected to cause damage in Vietnam and Laos over the coming weekend. Previously, Yagi caused floods and landslides in the Philippines, resulting in 16 deaths and 21 missing persons.
