Police Agency to Conduct Special Crackdown on Insurance Fraud in Second Half of Year... "Focusing Investigation Efforts"

This crackdown will expand to include the solicitation, inducement, advertising, and encouragement of insurance fraud, focusing investigative efforts on organized and habitual insurance fraud involving hospital personnel, brokers, and others.

Since August 2022, the police have designated insurance fraud as a malicious fraud issue that infringes on public livelihood and have been conducting regular and special crackdowns. In January of this year, they signed a memorandum of understanding with the Financial Supervisory Service and the National Health Insurance Service to strengthen cooperation in insurance fraud crackdowns. As a result, during the special crackdown in May and June, a total of 636 cases and 3,219 individuals (38 arrested) were apprehended.

A National Police Agency official stated, “As this is the first special crackdown conducted after the revision of the Special Act on the Prevention of Insurance Fraud, we will actively investigate not only cases where insurance money was obtained through insurance fraud but also acts such as solicitation and inducement of insurance fraud in accordance with the purpose of the revised law,” adding, “We will do our best with the determination to eradicate the ecosystem of fraud crimes.”
