A medical professional warned that falling asleep without removing mascara can cause serious side effects.

According to the New York Post on the 3rd (local time), ophthalmologist Dr. Gourlin Danoah posted a photo of a female patient's eye on her social media, which was reported in the American Academy of Ophthalmology's journal 'Ophthalmology.' The inside of the patient's eyelid in the photo was covered with dozens of black spots. It was revealed that she had used mascara and left it on for an extended period without properly removing it. The mascara applied to the eyelashes formed hard, small deposits on the skin under the eyelid, which scratched the cornea every time she blinked, causing pain and discomfort.

The patient also showed symptoms of follicular conjunctivitis, an infection of the mucous membrane covering the eye and eyelid. Conjunctivitis refers to inflammation of the tissue surrounding the eye (ocular surface), which can cause eye discharge, tears, itching, pain, and a foreign body sensation when it occurs. Dr. Danoah emphasized, "If eye makeup is not properly removed before bedtime, ophthalmic diseases can develop," adding, "It is crucial to completely remove makeup."

Meanwhile, eye makeup is known to cause various ophthalmic diseases due to bacteria. Cosmetics generally contain preservatives to prevent bacterial growth, but bacteria can relatively easily penetrate on a made-up face. If mascara or eyeliner touches the cornea (the transparent membrane covering the black part of the eye), it can scratch the epithelium and cause corneal abrasions. Experts recommend replacing mascara immediately if it clumps or has an unpleasant odor, even before its expiration date, and advise against applying eye makeup in a moving car where it can cause corneal injuries.
