An incident occurred at an air force base with a fighter jet runway where a drunken soldier drove a military vehicle recklessly and damaged the perimeter security facilities of the base.

On the 3rd, a post titled 'Explaining the Major Accident of the 1st Combat Transport Unit' was uploaded on an online community. The 1st Combat Transport Unit refers to the Air Force's 1st Fighter Wing. The informant who wrote the post said, "Several people drank and got drunk, hijacked a car, and drove at 100 km/h around the airfield perimeter," adding, "They broke through five barbed wire fences, and military police were dispatched and are investigating." According to the Air Force, on the 3rd, two drivers at the Gwangju 1st Fighter Wing were caught and are being investigated by the military police on charges including drunk driving. They drove a military passenger vehicle without permission after drinking alcohol and only stopped after crashing into several barbed wire fences along the base's perimeter road. However, it was found that the soldier did not drive on the runway.

An Air Force official explained, "It needs to be investigated whether they drove over 100 km/h," and added, "The post on the community is somewhat exaggerated." He further stated, "There are traces of damage to several sections of the perimeter road barbed wire, and the vehicle stopped after crashing into one spot, after which the military police immediately responded." The military police are investigating whether the soldier who drove the official vehicle was its assigned driver, whether there are other soldiers who drank alcohol, and where the alcohol was obtained.

Meanwhile, criticism has arisen that the military may be fundamentally unraveling as incidents continue, including North Korea hacking information on South Korean military reconnaissance aircraft operations, lawsuits and accusations involving the leadership of the Defense Intelligence Command, and a case where an intelligence agent recruited by Chinese intelligence leaked classified information for a large sum of money. In particular, as incidents of disciplinary lapses like the recent cases continue in the military, calls for bold measures are growing.

In March, Army officers held a drinking party at a training site during the joint South Korea-U.S. exercise Freedom Shield (FS). It was also revealed that personal information of intelligence agents was handed over to Chinese agents, North Korea hacked operational information of the Geumgang and Baekdu reconnaissance aircraft, which are South Korean military intelligence assets, and there are indications that KF-21 fighter jet development information was leaked to Indonesian technicians dispatched to South Korea. The Air Force regards this incident as a serious breach of military discipline and has dispatched an investigative team to the site to investigate the circumstances of the accident.
