Severe Tooth Pain After Surgery
Heart Attack 13 Days After Surgery
A man in China who had 23 teeth extracted and 12 implants inserted in one day ultimately died of a heart attack.
According to Shanghai Daily and other sources on the 5th, Mr. Hwang, who lives near Zhejiang Province, underwent surgery at a dental clinic on the 14th of last month to have 23 teeth extracted and 12 implants inserted. The surgery consent form stated "23 teeth extraction and 12 implants on the same day." The implant surgery involved six implants on the upper jaw and six on the lower jaw, performed by a doctor named "Yuan." However, after the surgery, Mr. Hwang experienced severe tooth pain and eventually died of a heart attack 13 days after the procedure.
Dental staff told local media in interviews that "the number of teeth that can be extracted during surgery depends on the patient's health condition," and "(the number of extractions) is decided by the doctor." One staff member added, "Usually, front teeth can be extracted and implanted on the same day, but molars require a recovery period of 3 to 4 months." However, according to Mr. Hwang's surgery consent form, the doctor extracted multiple molars and inserted implants on the same day.
The city health authorities are investigating the exact cause of Mr. Hwang's death. The authorities stated, "Since there was a 13-day interval between the surgery and the death, the cause is still under investigation." The dentist who performed the implant surgery reportedly has five years of treatment experience and is currently working normally.
A dental specialist pointed out, "Adults generally have 28 to 32 teeth," and "removing 23 teeth in one procedure is abnormal."
Mr. Hwang's daughter lamented, "I never thought my father would leave this world so soon." She stated that the dental procedure was clearly a medical accident and plans to take legal action. However, the dental clinic denied any medical malpractice regarding Mr. Hwang's death, saying it was "unknown matters." They also warned that they would hold people legally responsible if rumors were spread.
Local netizens who learned of the incident expressed disbelief. Comments included, "This is definitely the hospital's fault," "Not even 10, but 23 teeth were removed?" and "I wonder why they did a surgery that could have been divided into multiple sessions all at once."
