"Space Security as the Foundation for Building the Space Industry Ecosystem"

Korean Space Security Association Holds '1st Policy Debate'

The Korean Association for Space Security (KASS, President Lee Jae-woo) announced on the 5th that it held the "1st Policy Forum" at the Korea Science and Technology Center in Yeoksam-dong, Seoul, discussing the necessity of establishing a public-private ecosystem for the development of space security and the space industry.

In his opening remarks, President Lee Jae-woo emphasized that space security is key to fostering the space industry under the New Space environment and expressed his intention to present policy directions for public-private cooperation.


Yoon Oh-jun, 3rd Deputy Director of the National Intelligence Service, highlighted in his welcoming speech that "space security is a core element supporting the enhancement of national space competitiveness and the growth of the space industry," adding, "New Space is an unstoppable trend of the times, and the National Intelligence Service will also strengthen civilian cooperation in the space sector to contribute to the revitalization of the national space industry."


In the first session, themed "Current Status of Space Security Policy and Development Direction of Space Security Assets," chaired by Lim Jong-bin, Principal Researcher at the Korea Aerospace Research Institute, panel discussions were held with Kim Kyung-geun, Head of Satellite System Development Division at ADD, Oh Il-seok, Research Fellow at the Institute for National Security Strategy, Lee Jae-jin, Head of the Space Science Division at the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute, Jeon Hyun-seok, Head of the Public-Private-Military Cooperation Center at the Korea Space Technology Promotion Association, and Jung Kyu-heon, Director of the Space Command and Communication Project Division at the Defense Acquisition Program Administration.


The second session, chaired by Kang Kyung-in, Director of the Active Control Satellite Project Group at KAIST, focused on "Solutions to Constraints Faced by Private Companies in Developing Space Security Assets." Panelists included Kim I-eul, CEO of Satrec Initiative, Kim Ji-hong, Executive Director at KAI, Ahn Jae-bong, Vice President of CONTEC, Yoo Young-jun, Executive Director at Hanwha Systems, Lee Young-wan, Head of RFHIC Division, Choi Kyung-il, Specialist at KT sat, Choi Jong-jin, Vice President at LIG Nex1, and Hwang Soo-ik, CEO of Security Platform.


The Korean Association for Space Security plans to convey the opinions gathered from this forum to relevant government agencies to ensure the establishment of practical and realistic policy developments and support measures.


No Kyung-won, Deputy Director of the Space and Aviation Administration, stated in his congratulatory remarks that expert opinions will be reflected to strengthen space security.
