There are Seoul district mayors ensuring the safety of elementary school students commuting from early morning.
On the morning of the 4th, Lee Gijae, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, and Kim Kyungho, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu, conducted a traffic safety campaign on the school commute route in front of an elementary school. They carried out the campaign with the police and residents to raise awareness of safety for children.
On the 4th, Lee Gijae, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, participated in the ‘Children’s School Commute Route Traffic Safety Campaign’ in front of Mokuun Elementary School. This campaign was organized to jointly inspect hazardous factors on school commute routes around the school by the public, private, and police sectors and to strengthen traffic safety awareness in preparation for the second semester opening.
About 50 officials, including the Yangcheon-gu mayor, Yangcheon Police Station, Gangseo Yangcheon Office of Education, Green Mothers’ Association, and Model Drivers’ Association, participated in the event, distributing traffic safety promotional materials and souvenirs and guiding safe walking on the commute routes.
Communicating with children on their way to school that day, Lee Gijae, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, said, “We will take good care of our children outside of school so that they can grow up healthier and safer,” adding, “We will continue to closely monitor and inspect hazardous factors and blind spots on children’s school commute routes to maintain safe routes that children and parents can trust.”

Kim Kyungho, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu, also conducted the ‘Children First’ traffic safety campaign to strengthen safety on school commute routes for the fall semester. About 25 officials from Gwangjin-gu Office, Gwangjin Police Station, and Gwangjin Model Drivers’ Association attended the campaign held on the 4th. The public and private sectors gathered around Guui Elementary School during the morning commute time to help prevent traffic accidents.
On that day, Kim Kyungho, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu, held a sign that read ‘Please let the children go first’ and urged compliance with traffic safety rules. He also guided students to cross the crosswalk safely and carefully inspected the surroundings.
In addition, he encouraged considerate driving by drivers to raise awareness. Basic rules such as ‘No speeding in children protection zones’ and ‘Observe stop lines’ were promoted to contribute to creating a safe traffic culture.
After the campaign, Mayor Kim Kyungho visited Jayang Bokgaecheon-gil and the children protection zone near Sinja Elementary School, which were established this year. He thoroughly inspected the sites where traffic safety facilities were improved to check for any points needing supplementation. Jayang Bokgaecheon-gil had its sidewalk width expanded by 0.9 meters, and a highly visible yellow crosswalk and LED signs were installed. Near Sinja Elementary School, the existing on-street parking lot was removed and replaced with a diagonal crosswalk, and traffic lanes were reorganized to prevent traffic accidents.
Kim Kyungho, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu, said, “Children’s traffic safety is the top priority value that must be absolutely protected,” adding, “We will make every effort to eradicate traffic accidents in children protection zones and create a pedestrian environment where everyone can walk safely.”
Additionally, Gwangjin-gu is working hard to secure children’s traffic safety by implementing various policy projects such as ‘Dream Tree Traffic Safety Guardians,’ ‘School Zone Children Traffic Guidance,’ ‘Walking School Bus,’ and ‘Model Drivers’ Association Traffic Control Campaign.’
