Selection of Entries for the 97th Academy Awards in the United States
The film "Seoul's Spring," which attracted 10 million viewers last year, has been selected as South Korea's submission for the Best International Feature Film category at the 97th Academy Awards (Oscars) to be held in March next year, the Korean Film Council announced on the 4th.
The Korean Film Council receives a request from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) to recommend one Korean film for submission in the Best International Feature Film category each year. After a public call and review process, the submission is selected. This year, a total of 15 films, including "Pamy?" and "Veteran 2," were submitted as candidates, and "Seoul's Spring" was unanimously chosen by the judging panel.
The judges stated, "There was almost no disagreement regarding the film's completeness, as it evenly encompasses the dramatic excitement of tension, the directorial skill that maximizes the actors' performances into the realm of mise-en-sc?ne, and an outstanding insight into history." They added, "We hope that the film's thematic aspects, such as the illusion of charisma and the caricature of evil, will serve as timely metaphors appealing to the Academy Awards."
Released in November last year, "Seoul's Spring" (directed by Kim Seongsu) depicts the nine hours on December 12, 1979, when the Security Commander's rebellion mobilized military secret organizations and frontline units to Seoul to suppress the uprising. The film stars actors Hwang Jeongmin and Jung Woosung.
