Advantageous for By-product Hydrogen Supply Due to Location in Daesan Complex
Seosan City in South Chungcheong Province has been selected as a new hydrogen city by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. This is the third such designation in the province.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has been promoting the hydrogen city development project since 2020 to reduce carbon emissions and establish a sustainable energy system. In a hydrogen city, infrastructure is built to enable the production, transportation, storage, and utilization of hydrogen for housing, business facilities, and transportation.
So far, 15 local governments have been designated as hydrogen cities. For next year, Seosan in South Chungcheong Province, Ulsan Metropolitan City, and Uljin County in North Gyeongsang Province have been newly designated.
This marks the third hydrogen city in South Chungcheong Province, following Boryeong and Dangjin. Seosan is home to the Daesan Industrial Complex, one of Korea's three major petrochemical complexes, making it well-suited for supplying by-product hydrogen.
Starting next year, 30 billion won will be invested over four years in the Daesan Petrochemical Complex and the Galma-ri area of Buseok-myeon to establish hydrogen production facilities and more.
Once these facilities are established, heating and hot water produced using by-product hydrogen from the Daesan Complex will be supplied to public rental housing and other residential and public facilities. In addition, the city plans to expand the supply of hydrogen buses and hydrogen street sweepers, build hydrogen charging infrastructure for modular urban air mobility (UAM), and promote the production of green hydrogen linked with solar power.
An Ho-do, Director of the Industrial Economy Bureau, stated, "The core task for achieving carbon neutrality is the transition to eco-friendly energy such as hydrogen. This designation as a hydrogen city will support the realization of carbon neutrality and contribute to the development of a carbon-neutral economy, including UAM charging infrastructure and smart farm fuel cells."
Meanwhile, the hydrogen cities of Boryeong and Dangjin are being developed with an investment of 489 billion won by 2026.
