A school bus in eastern China's Shandong Province crashed into students and parents on their way to school, killing 11 and injuring 13. China follows a September academic calendar, and the day of the accident was reportedly the first day of school for new middle school students.
According to local media including state-run China Central Television (CCTV) and Xinhua News Agency on the 3rd, at around 7 a.m., a medium-sized school bus lost control and rammed into a group of students on their way to school at the intersection near the entrance of Fusanzhongxue in Dongping County, Tai'an City, Shandong Province. Many students going to school and parents seeing them off were gathered there, resulting in significant casualties.
In response to the tragic news, a blood donation drive ensued. A local resident told the media, "They said all blood types A, B, O, and AB are needed. I came to donate blood after hearing the news."
The accident resulted in the deaths of five students and six parents, with one person in critical condition. The other 12 injured are reported to be in stable condition.
Local authorities have arrested the bus driver and are investigating the exact cause of the accident.
