Gyeonggi Province will increase the monthly support payment for the representative policy of the 8th local government term, ‘Opportunity Income for Persons with Disabilities,’ from 50,000 won to 100,000 won, and recruit an additional 3,000 participants.
On the 3rd, Gyeonggi Province announced that through consultations with the Ministry of Health and Welfare last month, the support target for Opportunity Income for Persons with Disabilities has been raised from 7,000 to 10,000 people annually, and the support amount has also been increased from 50,000 won to 100,000 won per month.
Opportunity Income for Persons with Disabilities is a project that distributes smartwatches to persons with severe disabilities and provides compensation for engaging in activities of at least one hour, twice or more per week.
This is the first recognized case of disability value activities, which considers the reduction of social costs (medical expenses, care costs) when the body becomes somewhat less uncomfortable through activities as creating value.
Following the increase in support for Opportunity Income for Persons with Disabilities, Gyeonggi Province plans to strengthen performance management by additionally assigning tasks related to social participation activities and participation in performance surveys, in addition to participants’ health activities.
Kim Hana, Director of Welfare at Gyeonggi Province, stated, "With this increase, we have expanded the opportunities for persons with disabilities who create social value to have ‘opportunities for health,’ ‘opportunities for social participation,’ and ‘opportunities for income generation.’ We will strive to expand and institutionalize the Opportunity Income project for persons with disabilities."
Meanwhile, Opportunity Income is a representative policy of the 8th local government term in Gyeonggi Province that provides income compensation for a certain period to those who create value in our society but do not receive fair compensation. In addition to persons with disabilities, a total of six projects are underway, including artists, athletes, farmers and fishermen, climate action, and childcare.
