Pukyong National University Conducts Special Veterans Service in Jeju Island

The 'PKNU Student Volunteer Corps UN Peace Volunteer Division' of Pukyong National University (President Jang Youngsoo) carried out a special volunteer activity in Jeju Island for four days from August 26 to 29.

The volunteer group has been continuously engaging in activities in the fields of veterans' peace and UN-SDGs (United Nations Sustainable Development Goals), and this activity was also conducted as part of those ongoing efforts.

In the field of veterans' peace, the group carried out volunteer activities such as ▲ cleaning gravestones and environmental maintenance at Section 1, Area 6 of the National Jeju Cemetery ▲ reading letters of appreciation and delivering gifts to 15 Korean War veterans at the Jeju City Branch of the Korean War Veterans Association.

In the field of UN-SDGs, the group conducted ▲ volunteer work collecting Ulva prolifera (a type of green algae) near Gimnyeong Beach to preserve the aquatic ecosystem (SDG 14) ▲ marine litter collection, including abandoned fishing nets at Sinhung Beach, in cooperation with the Jeju Marine Healing Association and Jeju National University to practice climate action (SDG 13) ▲ and rural volunteer work such as assisting with transplanting mid-season Jeju cabbage seedlings, sponsored by Jeju Nonghyup, to promote urban-rural coexistence and reduce inequality (SDG 10).

Kang Minseo, the student representative of the volunteer group (senior, Electrical Engineering), shared, "We hope our volunteer activities in Jeju have provided a meaningful contribution, however small, to preserving Jeju's natural environment, which suffers from overtourism. Through these experiences, we have gained a valuable opportunity to foster a sense of community and volunteer spirit."

A representative from Pukyong National University stated that this volunteer activity was a meaningful step in fulfilling the university's responsibility to contribute to the local community and to participate in climate action to address global abnormal weather conditions.
