"Claim Your Local Tax Refund"…Incheon City Conducts Comprehensive Cleanup of 6.7 Billion KRW Unclaimed Refunds Until September

Incheon City announced on the 2nd that it will operate a comprehensive local tax refund unclaimed funds clearance period throughout September to return local tax refunds that taxpayers have not claimed.

According to the city, there are currently about 74,000 unclaimed local tax refund cases, totaling 6.7 billion KRW. These mainly arise from local income tax refunds due to national tax adjustments and situations such as ownership transfer or scrapping after prepayment of automobile tax.

During this clearance period, the city plans to pay refunds to taxpayers through promotional banners on the city website, sending refund notices, text messages, and phone calls.

In the first half of this year, the city also operated a one-month comprehensive clearance period in cooperation with districts and counties, refunding 18,000 cases totaling 1.3 billion KRW. Since last year, refund applications have also been accepted via text messages and the KakaoTalk channel for taxpayer convenience.

Unclaimed refunds can be checked and applied for through WETAX, Government24, and ARS (142-211). If a refund account is registered in advance, refunds will be automatically returned without the need for an application. Taxpayers who receive refund notices can apply for refunds via phone, text message, or the KakaoTalk channel without visiting City Hall.

An Incheon City official stated, "Most of the unclaimed refunds are small amounts under 50,000 KRW," and urged, "Since the right to claim expires five years after the refund decision date, we hope taxpayers apply for refunds within the deadline."
