The ‘2024 Jeollanam-do Gender Equality Week Commemoration Event’ was held at the Namak Sky Wedding Hall in Muan, with the participation of Jeonnam Governor Kim Young-rok, Jeonnam Superintendent of Education Kim Dae-jung, and over 1,500 residents.

Gender Equality Week was established based on the ‘Framework Act on Gender Equality’ to promote the realization of gender equality and raise public awareness. It is observed annually from September 1 to 7.

The commemorative event was held under the theme ‘Together Creating an Equal Jeonnam, a Happy Family,’ with the intention of sharing the true meaning of equality among all residents and practicing it in daily life to create a happy Jeonnam.

The ceremony at Namak Sky Wedding Convention included ▲a congratulatory performance by Haenam family band ‘Yedam’ ▲awards for 36 individuals recognized for contributions to gender equality ▲screening of the ‘OK! Now, Fair Family’ project video and audience talk ▲and a gender equality pledge performance.

In particular, the ‘OK! Now, Fair Family’ project was planned to propose a fair family community model through exploring family life and to spread a culture of practice for a gender-equal Jeonnam where work and care are shared. Couples in their 30s with four children and middle-aged couples in their 50s with two children participated, and the changed daily lives of these families were captured with observational cameras over two weeks. Jeonnam Governor Kim Young-rok participated in the video narration.

In his commemorative speech, Governor Kim said, “To overcome the crisis of low birthrate and population extinction, practicing gender equality in daily life and establishing a happy family culture are urgently needed,” adding, “I hope the ‘OK! Now, Fair Family’ project promoted in Jeonnam will spread as a family culture that leads to precious and happy relationships.”

He continued, “The establishment of a gender-equal culture in daily life is a prerequisite to overcoming the low birthrate and population extinction crisis,” and said, “Jeonnam Province will strive to create an environment favorable for having and raising children based on a culture of gender equality, and devote all efforts to ensuring that all residents enjoy a happy life.”

Following the ceremony, a Gender Equality Residents’ Harmony Festival was held at Namak Central Park. It offered various enjoyable activities such as a summer night walk (stamp tour), bubble shows, balloon art, photo booths, and a provincial government promotional hall, providing an opportunity to enjoy with loved ones and pledge to practice gender equality in daily life.

Jeonnam Province will also hold a ‘Family Happiness Grand Debate’ on September 3 at 1 p.m. in the Wangin Room of the provincial government building. The debate will be conducted in two parts: a talk concert and a forum.

At the talk concert, actor Choi Soo-jong, chairman of the Jeonnam Film Commission, will give a keynote lecture on ‘Precious and Happy Family Relationships.’ During the forum, participants will share sincere stories, discuss changing families, share family perceptions of the 2040 generation, and derive a family culture vision for the Jeonnam era of happiness.
