Chief of Court Administration Visits Southern District Court Site After 'Stabbing Attack During Trial'... Orders 'Enhanced Building Security'

On the afternoon of the 30th, Cheon Dae-yeop, head of the Court Administration Office, visited the Seoul Southern District Court where the incident took place, inspected the scene, and held a meeting with Hwang Jeong-su, chief judge of the Seoul Southern District Court. The meeting was attended by the director of the Planning Office, the chief planning officer, and the safety manager of the Court Administration Office. This was to prepare future countermeasures since the incident occurred within the court.

On the 28th, at the Seoul Southern District Court, Lee, the CEO of Haru Invest, a virtual asset custody service company indicted for a cryptocurrency scam involving 1.4 trillion won, was seriously injured after being attacked during the trial. The attacker, a man in his 50s identified as Mr. A, was immediately arrested at the scene. Although visitors are required to pass through a security checkpoint equipped with metal detectors at the court entrance, Mr. A reportedly passed through the checkpoint with a stainless steel kitchen knife concealed in his bag.

Following the incident, the Southern District Court took temporary measures such as posting notices prohibiting seating in the first row of the gallery closest to the defendant’s bench in each courtroom and taping off the chairs.

It is reported that Director Cheon issued instructions the previous day to all courts nationwide to strengthen building security. The directive included making security screenings more thorough to prevent prohibited items from being brought in.
