Yangcheon-gu, Seoul (Mayor Lee Gi-jae) will operate the "Companion Dog Culture Class" for 120 households in need of companion dog behavior correction this October.
The "Companion Dog Culture Class" is a hands-on program that helps correct problem behaviors of companion dogs through a professional pet education institution. Since its first operation in 2021 in response to the increasing number of pet-owning households, the district has expanded the number of participants each year, with a total of 274 households having participated so far.
This year, the Companion Dog Culture Class will be held from October 1 to 22 on the 9th floor of Haengbok Department Store, divided into 8 sessions with 15 households per session. In particular, to ensure efficient education and convenience for residents, private facilities within a local department store with good parking and accessibility will be utilized.
The curriculum consists of two parts: the "Behavior Correction Class" and the "Dog Sports Class." In the "Behavior Correction Class," participants will learn basic dog behavior training and problem behavior management, including a companion dog temperament test, "heel training" (a walking method where the dog follows the owner's heel), and leash handling. The "Dog Sports Class" offers dog exercise programs such as agility (obstacle course) and fitness.
Residents who wish to enroll can apply online on a first-come, first-served basis through the district office website starting September 2. Any Yangcheon-gu pet family with completed animal registration can apply.
Meanwhile, under the goal of becoming a "Special Pet District," the district has been promoting various pet-related policies. Notably, last year, it launched the "Yangcheon-style Our Neighborhood Animal Hospital Special Project," the first of its kind among Seoul’s autonomous districts, providing essential animal medical expenses support for seniors aged 65 and over receiving basic pensions. In June this year, the district also held the "Y-Petmily Festival," the largest local government pet culture event, which received great response from pet owners.
Mayor Lee Gi-jae said, "I hope this program will be of some help to pet households struggling with companion dog problem behaviors. We will continue to develop and operate programs to establish a mature pet culture, resolving conflicts between pet owners and non-pet owners and fostering a culture of consideration."
