CJ CheilJedang's 'Donggeuran Spam' is making a splash in the cooked meat market.
According to CJ CheilJedang on the 30th, Donggeuran Spam, which was launched last month, has sold about 500,000 units in just over two months. Right after its release, it ranked first in sales in the cooked meat category at Homeplus Express and received strong consumer preference at major supermarkets.
Donggeuran Spam maintains the original taste of Spam while enhancing convenience with its round shape. Instead of a can, it is packaged in a plastic pouch, reducing the hassle of opening it. It is suitable not only as a side dish for rice but also as a topping for pizza, pasta, fried rice, and various other dishes.
The product's popularity is attributed to its overwhelming convenience and appropriate portion size. CJ CheilJedang developed an easy-to-eat Spam, recognizing that many consumers found it inconvenient to open the traditional canned Spam. Since the product launch, positive reviews such as “Safe and simple, making it easy to cook” and “The taste is exactly like Spam, very satisfying” have spread, leading to strong sales.
Additionally, with rising prices, the proportion of consumers cooking at home has increased, and the product was launched with a weight suitable for a meal for a family of 3-4 people, which is also cited as a reason for its popularity. Donggeuran Spam weighs 160g, about 40% less than typical round hams on the market, so there is no need to separately store or discard leftover ham after opening.
CJ CheilJedang plans to lead the convenient cooking trend and expand the Spam brand’s reach with Donggeuran Spam. So Hyejin, CJ CheilJedang’s Spam brand manager, stated, “We achieved good results by maximizing convenience in the familiar Spam for consumers,” and added, “We will continue to introduce products that reflect consumers’ voices in the future.”
