The World's Largest Business Trip Buffet Company Compass Group
Service Reaching Polar Regions and Drilling Platforms
Diversifying Routes Including Sea Delivery via Delivery Apps
Anyone living in urban areas of Korea can enjoy the convenience of delivery applications (apps). With a simple search, meals can be delivered from nearby restaurants, and nowadays, even convenience store items are increasingly entrusted to riders for delivery.
But what if it’s in extreme environments? Humans live in remote areas, Antarctic research stations housing about 100 researchers, and offshore oil drilling platforms floating in the middle of the sea, and there is certainly a demand for delivery even in those places.
Remote workers need meals too... Helicopter delivery riders realize the 'Remote Area Catering' concept

The world's largest catering company, Compass, leverages its unique distribution know-how and vast capital to undertake a business no one else dares to attempt: 'Remote area catering.' Literally, it is a business delivering fresh ingredients, daily necessities, and meals to remote areas untouched by human hands.
The employees in charge of remote area catering differ from typical catering staff. The delivery personnel are experienced helicopter pilots. They load helicopters with chefs and ingredients and deliver to offshore platforms standing alone in the vast ocean or to remote areas. Compass Group’s remote area catering is mainly active in the UK and Norway adjacent to the North Sea oil fields, the oil-rich offshore regions of North America, and Canada near the Arctic.
Managers do more than just deliver meals; they also handle hazardous materials or procure medical supplies. Residents in remote areas have very limited contact with the outside world and must be fully prepared for any emergencies that may arise at any time.
The remote area catering business reportedly gained momentum especially after the pandemic. Most catering companies, including Compass, contract with corporations to provide cafeteria services, but with the rise of remote work due to social distancing, cafeteria demand has not returned to previous levels. Instead, large companies like Compass are turning their attention to remote area operations.
In Western countries, riders also deliver by boat
It’s not only specialized food ingredient companies diversifying delivery routes. Major Western delivery app services like Uber Eats are investing in various transportation methods. For example, Uber Eats recently launched a 'marine delivery service' in Europe and the United States.
When ordering near the coast, riders on motorboats deliver the food. This service appears to target tourists who enjoy surfing and wealthy customers enjoying luxury yacht tours.
As the delivery business grows, unique services targeting the premium market are emerging. Perhaps the image of riders, traditionally represented by motorcycles and delivery bags, will soon diversify into various modes of transportation such as boats and aircraft in the near future.
