Two East-West Connecting Arterial Roads Above Gyeongbu Expressway Open Today

Two arterial roads connecting Dongtan 1 and 2 New Towns in Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi-do, over the Gyeongbu Expressway were opened on the 29th. With the opening of these roads, the two new towns, which had been separated by the expressway, are expected to be integrated into a single living area.

Hwaseong City and Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) held an opening ceremony for two east-west arterial roads (Roads 1 and 6) over the Gyeongbu Expressway on the morning of the same day. About 100 people attended, including Jeong Myeong-geun, Mayor of Hwaseong, Kang Oh-soon, Head of LH Southern Gyeonggi Regional Headquarters, Lee Jun-seok, National Assembly member of the Reform Party, Jeon Yong-gi, National Assembly member of the Democratic Party, and Kang Eun-mi, Chief of Hwaseong Dongtan Police Station. Vehicle operation on the two arterial roads opened at 3 p.m. that day.
The opening of these connecting roads is a follow-up project to the completion of the 1.2 km underground section of the Gyeongbu Expressway in Dongtan in March. Above this section, six east-west connecting roads linking Dongtan 1 and 2 New Towns and a park have been created. The two roads opened on this day serve as arterial roads connecting Dongtan 1 and 2 New Towns. Each road was constructed as a six-lane, 31-meter-wide, 264-meter-long dual carriageway. Hwaseong City and LH plan to sequentially open the remaining four connecting roads within this year.
Road 1 connects the southern side of the Dongtan 2 New Town pilot complex with Dongtan 1 New Town, leading toward Osan and Pyeongtaek. Road 6 connects the northern side of the pilot complex with Dongtan 1 New Town, leading to Suwon. These roads are expected to improve traffic convenience for vehicles traveling from Dongtan New Town to surrounding areas. The city anticipates that the opening of the arterial roads will enhance accessibility to Dongtan Station for residents of Dongtan 2 New Town and alleviate traffic congestion during commuting hours.

Mayor Jeong said, "The east-west connecting roads over the Gyeongbu Expressway are not just a simple transportation network improvement but a turning point for the two new towns to be reborn as a single living area." He added, "This will contribute not only to revitalizing the local economy but also to improving the residential environment for citizens." Head Kang stated, "We will strive to open the remaining four connecting roads by the end of the year to create a unified living area for Dongtan 1 and 2 New Towns."
Meanwhile, the city and LH plan to continue cooperating to develop the park above the expressway, which began construction last month, into an urban park that can become a local landmark. The park is a linear park 1.2 km long, covering an area of 87,004 square meters. It is scheduled to be completed in January 2027.
