Seoul Eunpyeong-gu (District Mayor Kim Mi-kyung) announced on the 29th that it has launched a comprehensive plan to respond to electric vehicle fire incidents.

The plan focuses on four main measures: forming a task force (TF) for electric vehicle fire response, conducting surveys and safety inspections of electric vehicle charging facilities, establishing related ordinances and regulatory frameworks, and providing fire prevention education for apartment complex managers.

To enhance the safety of electric vehicle charging facilities and dedicated parking spaces, Eunpyeong-gu will operate the TF continuously in cooperation with relevant departments and local agencies such as fire and police until the fire response measures are stably implemented.

Additionally, joint safety inspections will be conducted with the local fire station targeting electric vehicle charging facilities installed in apartment complexes, public facilities, and public institutions. The inspections will comprehensively check the management status of the operating environment of charging facilities and the functionality of fire extinguishing equipment in parking lots to identify any additional fire prevention facilities needed.

In particular, the district plans to promote the enactment of related ordinances to establish administrative and financial support for the installation of fire extinguishing equipment and to conduct education aimed at preventing electric vehicle fires.

Fires occurring in apartment complex parking lots, where vehicles are densely parked, tend to spread quickly and cause extensive damage. Considering this, fire safety inspections, fire response manuals, and initial response training in case of fire will be provided to apartment complex managers and facility maintenance staff.

Currently, there are 2,551 electric vehicles operating within Eunpyeong-gu, and 1,855 electric vehicle charging stations.

District Mayor Kim Mi-kyung stated, “Concerns among residents have been growing due to recent electric vehicle fires. As the supply of electric vehicles increases, we will devote all efforts to establishing safety measures to protect the lives and safety of our residents.”
