Second Semester Begins!... Mapo-gu Protects Children's Safety at School Opening

Mapo-gu (Mayor Park Gang-su) has taken proactive measures to create a safe commuting environment for the start of the second semester.

According to the Road Traffic Authority's Traffic Accident Analysis System, the annual number of pedestrian casualties among children aged 12 and under in school zones was 369 in 2021, 389 in 2022, and 363 in 2023, consistently recording figures in the 300s each year.

Recently, traffic accidents within school zones have continued to occur, and the number of situations where children's walking is threatened due to illegal parking and stopping has increased, prompting Mapo-gu to launch intensive crackdowns.

This intensive crackdown will be conducted in all 51 school zones in Mapo-gu until September 4, during elementary school students' commuting hours from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The enforcement team will be divided into one mobile CCTV unit and two on-site enforcement units, immediately cracking down on all illegally parked vehicles except in designated child pick-up and drop-off zones.

Additionally, until September 2, Mapo-gu will conduct safety inspections of road occupancy at construction sites near schools, encouraging maintenance of construction materials and stored items that threaten pedestrian safety, and will create safe commuting routes by cracking down on unauthorized construction-related road-occupying vehicles and illegal street vendors near schools.

Furthermore, from August 30 to September 27, Mapo-gu plans to intensify efforts to improve safe commuting environments by inspecting old signboards and conducting a comprehensive cleanup of illegal advertisements, focusing on protection zones such as kindergartens and elementary schools over a four-week period.

Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, stated, “It is the responsibility of adults to create a safe world for our children, the future leaders.” He added, “Mapo-gu will do its utmost to create a pedestrian environment where children can walk safely on their own.”
