60-Year-Old Woman Visits Police Station Carrying 30cm Shell
"Found While Sorting Mother-in-Law's Keepsakes," She Testified
A woman in her 60s in Japan caused a commotion when she brought a shell to a police box, prompting nearby residents to evacuate.
On the 28th, the Japanese media outlet Yomiuri Shimbun reported, "At 2:05 PM on the 25th, a woman in her 60s visited the Momijidai Police Box, part of the Sapporo Atsubetsu Police Station in Atsubetsu Ward, east of Sapporo, carrying a shell approximately 30 cm in length." The shell was retrieved around 5:40 PM by the Self-Defense Forces after the police were notified. For about two and a half hours until then, the police evacuated residents within a 100-meter radius of the police box.
The woman stated that she found the shell while sorting through her mother-in-law's belongings. It has not yet been confirmed whether the mother-in-law possessed the shell or if it was mixed in with other family members' items. The media reported that the shell did not contain gunpowder, so there was no risk of explosion. The Hokkaido police emphasized, "If you find a shell, do not touch it and report it by calling 110."
After the story spread, local netizens reacted with comments such as, "The nearby residents must have been very shocked," "A shell as a keepsake," "I wonder why the mother-in-law had a shell," "The police handled it well," "It's fortunate that it did not lead to an accident," "If you find a shell, do not touch it and run as far away as possible," and "30 cm is not small. It's scary."
Meanwhile, there was a recent incident in South Korea where shells were found. On the 2nd, six shells were discovered at a storage yard in Incheon, prompting a military investigation. After receiving the report of the military shells, police and fire authorities responded, took safety measures, and handed the shells over to the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team. The shells were confirmed to be used by the Republic of Korea Armed Forces, and the possibility of anti-aircraft use was considered low. At that time, the military authorities announced plans to collect the discovered shells and verify the specific circumstances, including whether any shells had been leaked.
