Collaborative Research Between Future Doctors and Scientists: Physician-Scientist Experience
Dongnam Institute of Radiological & Medical Sciences (DIRAMS) conducted a sub-internship program for 11 medical and science & technology university students from June 12 to June 23.
The Dongnam Institute of Radiological & Medical Sciences is holding the 2024 Summer Sub-Internship Completion Ceremony.
The sub-internship is a program designed to allow prospective doctors and scientists to learn about the latest medical fields, experience research settings, and work together as a team on research projects.
Following the recruitment for last year's summer sub-internship, this marks the third time DIRAMS has selected participants for the program. Out of the applicants, 10 medical students and 1 KAIST student were chosen to participate in clinical practice and research experiments as part of their training.
The main programs of this year's summer sub-internship included observing surgeries in various surgical departments such as neurosurgery, hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, colorectal surgery, urology, and thoracic surgery, as well as observing interventional radiology procedures and participating in ward rounds in hematology-oncology.
In the research field, participants engaged in theoretical studies and laboratory tours in areas such as tumor biology, radiopharmaceutical research, radiation dose assessment, and medical physics. Specialized programs included a tour of the newly opened GMP radiopharmaceutical manufacturing facility, the first of its kind in the Yeongnam region.
Lee Changhun, Director of DIRAMS, stated, "We are conducting the sub-internship program to actively utilize the institute's strength of combining patient care with biomedical research, providing opportunities for prospective doctors and scientists to research and discuss together. We will continue to offer a variety of programs to provide students with concrete experiences that will help them plan their futures."
Hwang Sumin, a third-year medical student at Ewha Womans University College of Medicine who participated in the internship, shared, "Through this sub-internship at DIRAMS, I was able to indirectly experience the life of a physician-scientist beyond that of a general clinician. I realized that DIRAMS, with its comprehensive research facilities, is an institution where clinical practice and research are organically integrated."
DIRAMS is a public medical institution under the Ministry of Science and ICT and a government-funded research institute. As an early initiative to train physician-scientists, it is the only institution in the country to extend the sub-internship program not only to medical students but also to undergraduate students from science and technology-focused universities. The sub-internship is held every summer and winter vacation.
