The First Domestic Water Bottle Without Label in 2020
Implementation of 'Bottle-to-Bottle' Technology Using Recycled Materials
Lotte Chilsung Beverage is responding to the increasingly uncertain management environment regarding future global environmental issues by making sustainability capabilities based on ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management a core corporate strategy and carrying out various activities.
Lotte Chilsung is dedicated to activities for packaging resource circulation, such as the first development of label-free PET bottle products and the pioneering transition to transparent PET bottles for beer. In addition, it is leading environmental management through continuous packaging innovation, including the introduction of recycled PET (rPET) products using recycled materials for the first time in Korea and the development of packaging that is easy to recycle.
In January 2020, Lotte Chilsung launched 'Isis 8.0 ECO,' the first label-free product in the domestic bottled water brand market, removing labels from the PET bottle body. Over the past four years, by expanding label-free products, it has reduced plastic by 82 tons in 2021, 176 tons in 2022, and 182 tons in 2023. Label-free products have become a key purchasing criterion for consumers who pursue value consumption, and this has been expanded to other product lines such as 'Chilsung Cider Zero' and 'Trevi.'
In June 2021, Lotte Chilsung conducted the first technical and quality verification of rPET using plastic by-products in the domestic industry. To realize 'bottle-to-bottle' recycling, it is producing the 'Isis 8.0 ECO 1.5ℓ' product with 10% recycled materials, reducing environmental impacts from landfill and incineration of waste plastics, and establishing the foundation of a circular economy system where used plastics return to PET bottles.
Lotte Chilsung continues to make steady efforts to reduce plastic usage. The 500mL PET bottle of the bottled water brand 'Isis' has been lightened by 47.3%, from an initial weight of 22g to the current 11.6g. Last year, the weight of 14 types of PET bottles, including 'Today's Tea,' was reduced by about 14%, from 28g to 24g. Since February this year, the bottle neck height of all bottled water products has been lowered from 18.5mm to 12.8mm, reducing the preform weight of the 500mL PET bottle from 13.1g to 11.6g, and a new cap called the Extra Tall Cap (ET-CAP) was applied to reduce consumer drinking inconvenience.
