Russian-born renowned conductor Tugan Sokhiev will conduct the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra (SPO) for the first time.
The SPO will perform Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition," Prokofiev's "Violin Concerto No. 1," and Debussy's "Pr?lude ? l'apr?s-midi d'un faune" at the regular concerts held on the 29th and 30th at Lotte Concert Hall, with Sokhiev conducting.
Sokhiev studied conducting at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory under the legendary Soviet conductors Ilya Musin and Yuri Temirkanov. He is known as one of Musin's last disciples. Sokhiev began his conducting career after tying for second place at the Prokofiev Competition. In 2009, he made his debut conducting the Vienna Philharmonic as a substitute for Zubin Mehta, and in 2010, he debuted with the Berlin Philharmonic. He gained fame guest conducting prestigious orchestras such as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Orchestre de Paris. He served as music director of the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse (2008?2022) and the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow (2014?2022). His recording of Shostakovich's Symphony No. 8 with the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse on the Warner Classics label was awarded a gold record by the French classical music magazine Diapason in 2020. Last year, he led the Vienna Philharmonic on a tour to Korea, performing Prokofiev's Symphony No. 5 among other works.
The first piece performed at the SPO concert will be Debussy's "Pr?lude ? l'apr?s-midi d'un faune." Debussy composed this piece inspired by the long poem "L'apr?s-midi d'un faune" by French poet St?phane Mallarm?. It sensually expresses the desires and illusions of the faun "Pan" unfolding in the heat of a hot summer afternoon.
Next, violinist Esther Yoo will perform Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No. 1 as a soloist. Esther Yoo was the youngest ever laureate at the 2010 Sibelius International Competition and the 2012 Queen Elisabeth Competition. She was selected as the BBC's "New Generation Artist" in 2014 and became the first-ever artist-in-residence in the history of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in 2018.
In the second half, Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" will be performed. Mussorgsky was inspired by the posthumous exhibition of his friend Viktor Hartmann, who was a painter and architect. Mussorgsky composed the piano suite "Pictures at an Exhibition" based on ten paintings out of about 400 works by Hartmann. Since then, "Pictures at an Exhibition" has been orchestrated by many composers, with Maurice Ravel's arrangement, which will be performed on this occasion, being the most famous.
