According to major foreign media reports on the 25th (local time), the suspect in the stabbing rampage that killed three people at a festival in a German city has been arrested by the police.
According to reports, Herbert Reul, the Minister of the Interior of North Rhine-Westphalia, stated on the previous afternoon to the local broadcaster ARD, "We have just arrested the actual suspect." The suspect is a male, and the Ministry of the Interior spokesperson added that he surrendered voluntarily.
Minister Reul said the suspect was at a refugee shelter that had been previously searched, and that evidence was seized following interrogation. The police had previously arrested two other individuals related to the incident but explained that "it is highly likely they are not the real culprit," and that the person arrested this time is the actual suspect.
According to the German media outlet Der Spiegel, the suspect arrested this time is a 26-year-old Syrian who applied for asylum in Germany in December 2022. He is reported to have been granted protected immigrant status, which is often given to people fleeing war-torn countries. German authorities are said not to have classified this suspect as an Islamic extremist.
The terrorist organization Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility for this incident. However, the authenticity of this claim has not yet been confirmed.
