Yeongdeungpo-gu Utilizes Glutton Vacuum Cleaner... Dongjak-gu Prepares Neighborhood Cleaning Heroes... Gwangjin-gu Implements 6-Day-a-Week Cleaning System
Cleaning is the most important element in urban administration.
Even skipping cleaning for just one day can paralyze a city.
For this reason, each autonomous district pays close attention to cleaning administration.
Yeongdeungpo-gu has introduced eco-friendly street sweepers, effectively using them for street cleaning such as collecting flyers in densely populated areas.
Dongjak-gu is creating not only local cleaning but also jobs for the elderly through the ‘Our Neighborhood Cleaning Solution’ program.
Gwangjin-gu has implemented a six-day-a-week cleaning system, receiving positive evaluations for making neighborhoods cleaner.

Yeongdeungpo-gu Introduces Eco-Friendly Street Sweepers for Street Cleaning in High Foot Traffic Areas, Collecting Flyers and Cigarette Butts... Enhances Cleaning Efficiency with Powerful Suction and Improves Working Conditions for Environmental Officers
Yeongdeungpo-gu (Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced that it is creating a pleasant street environment and improving the working conditions of environmental officers by utilizing ‘eco-friendly street sweepers.’
The eco-friendly street sweepers, introduced last year for effective street cleaning, have recently proven their worth as unauthorized litter such as coffee cups has increased due to the hot weather.
The ‘eco-friendly street sweeper’ is a vacuum suction cleaner designed as a ‘portable vacuum cleaner’ that environmental officers can easily pull around. With powerful suction, it efficiently collects trash and reduces the labor intensity of street cleaning during hot summers compared to traditional equipment like brooms and handcarts.
In particular, it can safely and cleanly collect difficult-to-clean pet waste, debris, and potentially hazardous items such as glass shards and sharp objects that could cause accidents during collection.
The district has first deployed the ‘eco-friendly street sweepers’ in high foot traffic areas such as Dangsan-dong, Yeongdeungpo Station, and Yeouido Station. These areas frequently experience unauthorized littering of cigarette butts, disposable cups, and illegal flyers, resulting in numerous complaints.
One environmental officer shared, “I used to suffer from shoulder and back pain after long hours of broom cleaning, but thanks to the ‘eco-friendly street sweeper,’ it has become much easier.”
Additionally, the district explained that using the ‘eco-friendly street sweeper’ to clean rainwater drains clogged with fallen leaves greatly contributes to preventing flood damage.
Efforts for a ‘Clean Yeongdeungpo’ do not stop there. The district is actively using 1,445 closed-circuit (CCTV) cameras to intensively monitor 47 habitual illegal dumping sites.
Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, stated, “We introduced the ‘eco-friendly street sweeper’ to ensure clean street cleaning and improve the working environment of environmental officers. Since cleaning administration is fundamental to daily administration, we will carefully oversee it and do our best to create a clean Yeongdeungpo-gu.”

Dongjak-gu’s ‘Our Neighborhood Cleaning Solution’ Launches Second Half of the Year
Composed of Local Residents Familiar with the Neighborhood... Creating a Pleasant Environment and Jobs
Dongjak-gu (Mayor Park Il-ha) has completed recruitment for ‘Our Neighborhood Cleaning Solution’ and will begin second-half operations starting in September.
‘Our Neighborhood Cleaning Solution’ consists of local residents familiar with cleaning-vulnerable areas, performing various tasks to create a clean environment, including patrol and management of areas with frequent complaints, cleaning rainwater drains in back alleys to prepare for floods and typhoons, and managing cleaning supplies such as smart collection bins.
Introduced for the first time in the first half of this year, the program received enthusiastic responses from residents and will continue operations in the second half.
A total of 64 people were selected, with an average of four people assigned per neighborhood. They work five days a week, three hours a day, divided into morning and afternoon shifts.
With the operation of the cleaning solution, complaints related to cleaning at neighborhood community centers have significantly decreased, improving administrative service efficiency.
Residents are welcoming the second-half operation as they see their neighborhoods becoming cleaner, and participants also feel a sense of fulfillment from their activities and wish to continue their involvement.
Park Il-ha, Mayor of Dongjak-gu, said, “The neighborhood has become cleaner, and we have achieved the dual effect of job creation. We will continue to discover and promote meaningful projects that residents can participate in.”

Gwangjin-gu Implements ‘Daily Household Waste Collection System’ Starting This Year
All Neighborhoods Can Dispose of Waste Six Days a Week: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday
Gwangjin-gu (Mayor Kim Kyung-ho) has been implementing the daily household waste collection system since January 1 of this year.
The system changed from collecting waste every other day three times a week to collecting waste six days a week starting in the new year. This reflects a strong commitment to innovatively improve the waste collection system, a pledge of the 8th local government administration.
Previously, disposal days varied by neighborhood, causing confusion, but now all 15 neighborhoods can dispose of waste six days a week on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. However, Saturdays and legal holidays are excluded due to the suspension of waste acceptance at public processing facilities such as Gangnam Resource Recovery Facility and the Metropolitan Landfill Site.
The previously dual system of direct management and outsourcing for waste collection will also be unified. All household waste (general, food waste, and recyclables) will be collected by outsourced companies.
Kim Kyung-ho, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu, said, “We expect that the implementation of the daily collection system will solve the inconvenience residents faced with waste disposal and maximize convenience. We are striving to process waste efficiently and stably.”
