A man in his 40s who threatened with a weapon to extort money and sold and used drugs was sentenced to five years in prison.
The Criminal Division 11 of the Seoul Western District Court (Chief Judge Bae Seong-jung) announced on the 24th that it sentenced Mr. A, a man in his 40s who threatened and confined a man in his 50s whom he did not know, extorted money, and used methamphetamine, to five years in prison on charges of special robbery and violation of the Narcotics Control Act.
Mr. A is accused of calling a designated driver, Mr. B, at around 11:20 p.m. last February, dropping him off at his home in Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul, then pulling out a weapon he had prepared in advance to threaten and confine Mr. B, and taking 1 million won and cards from him. Mr. A also took a photo of Mr. B’s resident registration card, which showed his home address, with his phone camera and threatened, "If you report now, I will come find and kill you after I am released."
He is also accused of purchasing and using methamphetamine from February 15 to 17. On February 17, he threatened a man in his 30s with a knife, and on the same day, when the police arrived after a report, he gave his older brother’s resident registration number instead of his own, committing illegal use of a resident registration number.
The court stated, "Considering the circumstances and methods of the crime, its content and danger, and the damage caused, the defendant’s guilt is very serious. He was sentenced to prison for robbery and injury in 2001 and has a similar record in 2018 for brokering methamphetamine sales." However, the court also noted, "The defendant admitted all the crimes in this case and showed remorse, and some of the victims expressed that they do not want punishment for the defendant," as reasons for sentencing.
