Dongnam Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences and UNIST Hold 'Artificial Intelligence Seminar' for Future Innovation in Medical Science

Exploring Future Innovation Strategies in Medical Science Using Artificial Intelligence

The Korea Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences Southeast Branch, an agency under the Ministry of Science and ICT, held a seminar on future innovation in medical science using artificial intelligence in the main conference room of the research center on the 20th, in collaboration with Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST).

This seminar invited relevant experts to provide lectures and discussions, aiming to share the latest trends in medical science research utilizing artificial intelligence technology, as well as clinical and industrial application cases.

Lee Changhun, Director of the Southeast Branch of the Korea Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences, said in his opening remarks, "In the medical field, artificial intelligence is being used in various areas, from disease diagnosis and treatment planning to patient monitoring. At our hospital, we have adopted an AI solution for stroke diagnosis, enabling faster and more accurate analysis of MRI and CT images," adding, "I expect that through the lectures of experts in the AI field, we will be able to discover good ideas for developing new treatments and drugs."

Lee Jaeyong, Vice President of UNIST, shared his thoughts, saying, "UNIST and the Institute are neighboring institutions just 30 minutes apart. Since both institutions are concerned with improving the quality of human life, I expect there will be many areas for collaboration."

The first speaker, Bae Sungchul, Dean of the Graduate School of Medical Science at UNIST, gave a presentation on "Digital Innovation in Medicine." He introduced the necessity of a digital revolution in healthcare, as well as healthcare application cases that combine digital technologies such as artificial intelligence, including cryoanesthesia using digital technology and thyroid hormone measurement using smartwatches, sharing how the future of medicine is arriving faster than expected.

The second lecture was delivered by Yang Seungjun, Director of the UNIST AI Innovation Park, under the theme "UNIST AI Innovation Park." He introduced AI technologies that detect errors and diagnose safety better than skilled workers in industrial sites, stating, "Since it is necessary to develop AI technologies equipped with advanced algorithms to assist professionals exhausted by work in medical and research settings, collaboration with the Institute is possible."

Next, Yoon Sunghwan, Professor at the UNIST Graduate School of Artificial Intelligence, introduced "Preliminary Research on AI-based Brain Signal Learning," explaining, "By utilizing AI-based meta-learning and federated learning methods, it is possible to develop technologies that protect patients' medical information while enhancing the safety of treatment."

Finally, Song Jehun, CEO of NetTargets Co., Ltd., gave a lecture on "Industrial Application Cases of AI-based New Drug Development," providing detailed explanations of the principles of identifying drug targets for colorectal cancer and cases of discovering immuno-oncology targets using T-cell models.

The two institutions plan to continue holding regular joint research seminars and to create exemplary cases through joint research, research project planning, and professional workforce training in the fields of medical science and biomedical research.
