[2024 Global Wine and Food Trip]
Wonohwon, Wines from Italy's Campania Region
Introducing Egon Muller, Rocca del Principe, and More
Asia Economy will host the '2024 Global Wine & Food Trip' at Sebitseom Floating Island in Seocho-gu, Seoul, for two days starting from the 23rd. Marking its third edition this year, the Global Wine & Food Trip will feature major domestic wine importers and food companies, providing an opportunity to taste a variety of regional wines and enjoy food pairings.
WonOwon will showcase wines from 'Rocca Del Pricipe' in the Campania region of Italy at this event. Rocca Del Pricipe is a family-run winery established in 2004 in southern Italy's Campania region. The vineyards of Rocca Del Pricipe, located at an altitude of 500 to 600 meters near the ancient city of Pompeii, are characterized by volcanic rock components, giving the wines a unique minerality. Campania experiences hot and dry summers and mild winters, resulting in a long grape growing season and fewer pests due to volcanic soil. Additionally, winds from the Mediterranean coast cross the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Apennine Mountains, cooling the heat and helping to maintain the acidity of the grapes.
The featured wine, 'Rocca Del Pricipe Fiano Di Avellino DOCG,' is a white wine with 13% alcohol content made from 100% Fiano grapes. Fiano is a variety known for its high sugar content, strong tropical fruit flavors such as pineapple and mango, and high acidity. Although cultivated across various parts of Campania, the Avellino area is especially recognized for its high quality due to its proximity to the Apennine Mountains and the high altitude of its vineyards. The region also benefits from a mild climate, significant diurnal temperature variation, and mineral-rich volcanic and limestone soils.
Also available from the same winery is the 'Rocca Del Pricipe Aglianico Irpinia.' This wine, made from 100% Aglianico grapes with 14% alcohol content, offers aromas of dark red fruits such as blackberry and plum, followed by complex secondary and tertiary notes of spices and herbs. It features a rich body and smooth finish with a long-lasting aftertaste and excellent aging potential.
Aglianico is a red grape variety that thrives at high altitudes. The volcanic soil provides Aglianico with the potential to produce wines comparable to Nebbiolo from Piedmont in northern Italy. Aglianico wines from Campania are known for their high tannin content and strong structure, making them well-suited for long-term aging.
In addition, WonOwon will introduce 'Kanta Egon Muller Riesling,' produced by German Mosel winemaker Egon Muller in the Adelaide region of South Australia, as well as sweet sparkling wines from 'Maranello,' a producer in Italy's Veneto region.
