A group that deliberately caused multiple traffic accidents in Cheonan, Chungnam and extorted tens of millions of won has been handed over to the prosecution.

The Chungnam Provincial Police Agency announced on the 22nd that six people, including a man in his 40s identified as A, were sent to the prosecution without detention on charges of violating the Special Act on the Prevention of Insurance Fraud.

They are accused of colliding rental cars and motorcycles with other vehicles and motorcycles on 10 occasions from 2022 to last year, defrauding insurance companies of about 25 million won.

It was found that A convinced his accomplices to commit the crimes together by promising to share the settlement money from the accidents with them.

Although they denied the charges during the police investigation, they admitted to the crimes after digital forensic analysis of their mobile phones confirmed their conspiracy.

A police official said, "If you deliberately cause frequent traffic accidents to receive insurance payouts, you may be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison or fined up to 50 million won under the Special Act on the Prevention of Insurance Fraud," adding, "Insurance payouts may be reclaimed and your driver's license may also be revoked."
