Hong Kong Influencer Mei Yan So Robbed in 2020
Three Robbers Break In, Lock Her in Bedroom and Ransack Belongings
Robber's Wife Accused as Accomplice for Storing Stolen Goods
Meiyan So, a Hong Kong beauty influencer and cosmetics company CEO, drew attention after being the victim of a home robbery, and a trial was held regarding whether the robber's wife was an accomplice.
According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP) on the 21st, in 2020, three men wearing black masks suddenly broke into So's apartment, tied So, her 6-month-old son, and a housekeeper with tape, locked them in the bedroom, and then ransacked the place.
At the time, So was asleep in the master bedroom, while the housekeeper and So's son were in the living room. After the robbers rang the doorbell, the housekeeper opened the door, and they rushed inside. So woke up from the noise in the living room and went out of the room, only to find the robbers hitting her child. So shouted, "Take whatever you want, just leave the child alone."
The robbers tied them up and began thoroughly searching the house. One of the robbers approached So and asked, "Where is the cash hidden in the house?" When she said there was no cash at home, he reportedly punched her. The group stole items worth 3.6 million Hong Kong dollars (about 512 million KRW at the time) and fled but were soon caught by authorities. Since So is an influencer with tens of thousands of followers in Hong Kong, the incident attracted significant local attention.
The case handled by the Hong Kong High Court that day concerned whether A, one of the three robbers, and his wife B were accomplices. Local prosecutors pointed to the discovery of some luxury goods worth 11.5 million Hong Kong dollars (about 1.97283 billion KRW) in B's bedroom as evidence of her complicity. Although no direct evidence or circumstances linking B to the robbery were confirmed, it was believed she played a role in storing and handling the stolen goods after the incident. She was aware that the three handbags, computer bag, and fur coat her husband suddenly brought home were stolen items.
Local prosecutors said, "Looking at the evidence, B visited the apartment the day before A and his group carried out the robbery," meaning "B knew what was going to happen." Also, when local investigators first visited B's residence, she refused to open the door, and police forcibly entered. However, B currently denies all charges, including possession of stolen goods. The trial is scheduled to proceed daily for a week.
