Daejeon City has decided to temporarily halt the Gapcheon outdoor water park construction project, which was planned to be built on the riverside of Gapcheon in front of the DCC in Doryong-dong, Yuseong-gu, with an investment of 15.8 billion won.

The city announced that due to unstable flood control of Gapcheon caused by extreme rainfall and unpredictable heavy rain resulting from climate change, the project will be postponed until river maintenance work, such as sediment removal, is completed.

To prepare for extreme rainfall caused by climate change, the city is currently establishing a detailed plan for the national river sediment removal project. In consultation with the Ministry of Environment, the city plans to carry out sediment removal before the rainy season in 2025.

Park Jongbok, Director of Environment at Daejeon City, said, "As the riverbed of Gapcheon has risen and flood control is unstable, we will postpone the water park project and focus on river maintenance, such as sediment removal, to thoroughly prevent river disasters."

Previously, on June 10, the Welfare and Environment Committee of the Daejeon City Council passed the "Daejeon Gapcheon Outdoor Water Park Management and Operation Ordinance" as originally proposed. The ordinance includes operating a water play facility 85 meters long, 25 meters wide, and 1 meter deep in the summer season with an initial investment of 10 billion won, and in the second phase, investing an additional 5.8 billion won to build a lazy river. In the winter season, the facility would be used as an outdoor skating rink.

In relation to this, Daejeon Chungnam Green Alliance and Daejeon Environmental Movement Alliance held a press conference in front of the Geumgang Basin Environmental Office on June 12, criticizing, "Although Gapcheon is not as wide as the Han River, Daejeon City is trying to build a water park without properly analyzing the situation of Gapcheon and only looking at successful cases."

They continued, "A water park was already built at the confluence of Yuseongcheon and Gapcheon, but it was left neglected after less than a year of operation. While the existing water park is not being properly operated or utilized, the plan to build a large-scale, all-season water park makes it seem as if Daejeon City is obsessed with construction projects," they criticized.
