Gyeonggi Housing and Urban Corporation (GH) held the awards ceremony for the ‘GH Space Welfare Youth Contest’ on the 21st at the new GH headquarters in Gwanggyo, presenting certificates and a total prize money of 35 million KRW to 18 teams selected for excellence, including the grand prize and gold prize.
First launched last year to discover young people’s creative ideas on space welfare, this year’s GH Space Welfare Youth Contest was held under the theme of ‘Balanced Development Plans for Aging Planned Cities and Old Downtown Areas,’ divided into a general contest category and a university (graduate school) studio-linked category.
The grand prize was awarded to the urban planning proposal for the old downtown area titled ‘An Active Approach Toward Jungdong New Town and the Old Downtown’ submitted by Joo Dong-eun, Choi Hyun-soo, and Jo Sung-woo. The gold prizes went to ‘Community Strengthening in Gwangmyeong Haan-dong’ by Kim Sung-joo, Chae Hee-jin, and Ji Dong-jun, and ‘Low-rise Space Development Linked with Public Programs in Goyang Neunggok’ by Yoon Tae-ho and Lee Eun-gyu.
A total of 111 entries were submitted in the general contest category, and after evaluation by experts including GH public architects and young architects, 18 teams were honored with awards.
The studio category was conducted with support for studio project implementation costs, allowing selected universities?including Korea University, Yonsei University, Inha University, Hanyang University, and Hongik University?through prior application and a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to carry out design projects over one semester. At the awards ceremony, certificates of completion were presented to professors and students involved in the studio-linked category.
From today until September 3, GH will exhibit eight award-winning works from the general contest category, including the grand prize, gold prize, and silver prize, as well as 20 representative works from each school in the studio-linked category on the third floor of the new Gwanggyo headquarters.
Kim Se-yong, President of GH, stated, “Through this contest, we were able to confirm the creative and innovative ideas of young people regarding space welfare. GH will do its best to provide a better daily life through the realization of space welfare.”
