The Korea Exchange Market Surveillance Committee announced on the 21st that it has issued an 'investment caution' regarding theme stocks related to the resurgence of COVID-19 and MPOX (monkeypox virus infection).
According to the exchange, due to the recent spread of COVID-19 and MPOX, related stocks have surged excessively, raising concerns about investor damage caused by sharp price fluctuations, and they aim to alert investors to exercise caution.
The exchange urged caution against the possibility of unfair trading, such as false or exaggerated rumors riding on the theme of benefiting from ventures related to bio-related businesses. For example, one company announced a large-scale single sales supply contract during a past mask shortage but later reversed it.
An exchange official stated, "In the case of theme stocks, prices often rise due to speculative demand, so investment decisions should be made after a sober judgment of the authenticity or feasibility of the related business." He added, "We will actively monitor theme stocks related to the resurgence of COVID-19 and MPOX and will strongly respond in cooperation with financial authorities if unfair trading activities are detected."
