Osborne "I Will Become a Million Times Better Driver Than Non-Disabled People"
A Canadian woman born without arms and with much shorter legs than others recently obtained her driver's license. After seven years of effort, she acquired her desired vehicle and license, proudly showing off her 'dream car.'
Canada's public broadcaster CBC shared the story of Talie Osborn (44) on the 17th (local time). Osborn, who shared her journey of purchasing a car and obtaining a license on her social media, said, "If you truly want to achieve something, you can do it no matter what obstacles there are."
According to CBC, one of the driving videos she posted on Instagram has become a sensation, currently recording over 20 million views. Her dream car is a hot pink Mini Cooper. In an interview, Osborn revealed that she bought the car used. However, the dealership estimated that modifying the vehicle to suit her needs would cost about $100,000 (133 million KRW).
Osborn tried to raise funds through crowdfunding campaigns, but plans were disrupted by COVID-19. While car insurance payments continued, Osborn's mother even advised her to sell the vehicle. Osborn explained that she maintained the car by paying the insurance because "selling the car would literally mean giving up on my dream."
A charitable organization contacted her, offering to cover all remaining costs related to the vehicle. Eventually, the hot pink Mini Cooper was transformed into Osborn's actual dream car that she could drive. A separate wheel was installed on the left side of the driver's seat so she could steer, and the brake pedals were extended. A touchscreen was added to control gear shifts and turn signals. A seatbelt that Osborn, who has no arms, can fasten by herself was also installed.
She also obtained her driver's license. Osborn submitted documents detailing her medical condition and an occupational therapist's opinion in Nevada, USA, and received her license. She told CBC, "Because it is a million times harder for me (without arms and with short legs) to get a license than for able-bodied people, I will be a million times better driver."
