Securing Supply Through Early Morning Fishing Right After Closed Season
1140 KRW per 100g... 17% Lower Than Last Year
Discount Events on Squid, Kodari, and More
Emart announced on the 21st that it will offer autumn fresh blue crabs at up to half price for one week from the 23rd to the 29th of this month.
The autumn blue crabs being sold this time are fresh crabs caught off the west coast, including Sinjindo in Taean, Chungnam Province. These crabs were harvested after the two-month closed season ended. The blue crab closed season is implemented for two months during the summer spawning period according to the Enforcement Decree of the Fisheries Resources Management Act.
Emart is selling blue crabs, normally priced at 1,900 KRW per 100g, at a 30% discount of 1,330 KRW per 100g when customers accumulate Shinsegae Points through an event held with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries. Additionally, when paying with event cards, customers receive an extra 20% discount, bringing the final price to 950 KRW per 100g. The event cards include Emart e, Samsung, KB Kookmin, Shinhan, NH Nonghyup, Lotte, IBK Industrial Bank, and Jeonbuk Bank.
Autumn is considered the peak season for blue crabs. Unlike spring crabs, the proportion of male crabs is higher in autumn. Autumn male crabs have more meat and a higher yield than female crabs that have finished spawning, and they are typically used for soups or steamed dishes. An analysis of Emart’s blue crab sales last year showed that blue crabs sold from the time autumn fresh crabs are shipped until October accounted for 70% of the annual sales.
Emart Everyday also sells autumn fresh blue crabs at 1,140 KRW per 100g, a 40% discount when paying with event cards. This price is 17% cheaper than the same period last year. Emart explained that price competitiveness was enhanced through prior integrated purchasing. The event cards include Samsung, Shinhan, Lotte, and KakaoPay.
Meanwhile, Emart offers a 20% discount on domestic fresh shrimp when purchased together with blue crabs, selling them at 2,720 KRW per 100g. As part of a seafood consumption promotion event held with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, some items are discounted only for Shinsegae Point Card members. Domestic fresh squid is offered at a 30% discount for 3,990 KRW per piece, cleaned kodari (dried pollack) at a 20% discount for 1,904 KRW per piece, and stir-fried anchovies (200g, 2 packs) at a 30% discount for 10,486 KRW.
Lee Sujeong, Emart’s blue crab buyer, said, "Autumn fresh blue crabs are affordable yet abundant ingredients, often called a shield against table inflation," and added, "We hope customers purchase various domestic seafood such as seasonal blue crabs and fresh shrimp at Emart at affordable prices."
