Fifteen people were rescued, but one onboard chef died, and six went missing. The missing include four British and two Americans, among them Mike Lynch and his daughter Hannah. Lynch's wife Angela Bacares was rescued. The yacht had 10 crew members and 12 passengers onboard.

Lynch founded the software company Autonomy in 1996 and grew it into a large corporation, earning him the nickname 'Bill Gates of the UK.' However, in 2011, during Autonomy's $11 billion acquisition by the American company Hewlett-Packard (HP), he was suspected of inflating the company's performance. He was indicted in the U.S. on charges including financial fraud, underwent about a year of house arrest during his trial, and was acquitted in June this year.

According to the British daily The Guardian and others, most of the passengers onboard were colleagues who had worked with Lynch. The trip was to celebrate Lynch's acquittal.
