Hiring 'Child Development Experts'
Taking Care of Children Instead of Busy Parents... Monthly Salary 5.6 Million Won
Different from Tutors... Thorough 'Childcare Experts'
Among China's upper class, a so-called "child development expert" craze is reportedly sweeping through. A child development expert is known as a dedicated consultant responsible for everything from a child's early years to academics, mental health, and daily life.
On the 17th (local time), Hong Kong media outlet South China Morning Post (SCMP) focused on the craze for "child development experts" hired by wealthy Chinese couples. The media described this professional group as "experts on everything parents do," adding that they provide all the services needed to raise children.
The cost of hiring a child development expert is enormous. The highest-paid experts reportedly earn about $4,200 (approximately 5.6 million KRW) per month. However, the path to becoming a child development expert is by no means easy.
Child development experts are strictly selected by dedicated companies. Candidates must all hold a master's or doctoral degree and be graduates of prestigious universities in the United States or the United Kingdom. They are required to have fluent English skills, enjoy sports, and possess specialized knowledge in child psychology.
Regarding these stringent selection criteria, SCMP explained, "They are not tutors or childcare helpers, but experts deeply involved in the child's life and emotions."
The work of a child development expert is not much different from that of a "parent." They take children to the hospital instead of parents when the child is sick, help with homework, and provide emotional support. Essentially, they perform all the traditional tasks parents do for their children.
Due to the high cost, child development experts are a symbol of wealthy families. It is reported that clients seeking child development experts in China typically have a net worth of over 10 million yuan (approximately 1.8 billion KRW). Parents in these families are usually busy with work and often away on overseas business trips.
Although the popularity of child development experts is soaring, opinions among ordinary citizens are divided. One Chinese netizen criticized the current trend, saying, "'Parent' is a word that carries much deeper emotions than just a simple expert."
However, there were also responses expressing understanding of those who hire child development experts. One netizen said, "If an expert who graduated from a prestigious university takes care of my child, wouldn't I live without worrying that my child will fall behind at school?"
