"Why Won't You Lend Me Money?" Elderly Parents Do Not Want Punishment for Unfilial Son Who Choked and Beat Them

Chuncheon District Court Sentences to 1 Year Imprisonment

A man in his 40s who assaulted his elderly parents after they refused to lend him money has been sentenced to prison.

On the 17th, Judge Park Seong-min of the Chuncheon District Court Criminal Division 3 announced that A (45), who was charged with violating the Elderly Welfare Act, the Disabled Welfare Act, and property damage, was sentenced to one year in prison.

The court stated, "The defendant repeatedly committed the crimes, causing multiple instances of property damage, and did not reach settlements with the victims, which are unfavorable factors," adding, "Considering that the elderly parents do not wish for the defendant to be punished, the sentence was determined comprehensively."

At the end of April, A asked his elderly parents for money but became enraged when they said, "We don't have money to lend." At his parents' home in Hongcheon, he threw his 60-year-old mother's glasses onto the floor, breaking them, and damaged appliances and furniture such as a coffee pot and dining table by throwing them. When his father in his 70s tried to stop him, he pushed his father down, climbed on top of him, strangled him, and punched him, among other acts of assault.

There are additional charges of violence. The indictment also states that A repeatedly damaged other people's belongings without reason at locations including a Buddhist temple, a restaurant, and a bus terminal ticket office in the Hongcheon area.

A similar incident occurred in the area last month. A man in his 40s was sentenced to one year in prison for stabbing his father, who was nearly 70 years old, in the face with a sharp object while demanding money. He was charged with verbally abusing his father in his 60s and repeatedly stabbing his forehead and ear with a sharp object.
