"Harris Will Be an Outstanding President"
Winning Votes by Leading IRA Prescription Drug Price Cuts
U.S. President Joe Biden has stepped up his full support for Vice President Kamala Harris. On the 21st of last month, after announcing he would not seek re-election, Biden stood alongside Vice President Harris at an official event for the first time, praising her as "going to be an amazing president" and attacking former President Trump by calling him "Donald Dump."
According to reports from The New York Times (NYT) and CNN on the 15th (local time), President Biden and Vice President Harris visited Largo County, Maryland, to highlight the achievements of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) in lowering prescription drug prices.
Vice President Harris, who spoke first, said, "I believe no president has accomplished more than Joe Biden, including expanding healthcare support," adding, "Now we are stepping into the next phase." She also noted, "Seniors have struggled to afford costs for medications like insulin," and said, "Two years ago, we granted Medicare the authority to negotiate prescription drug prices," adding, "At that time, I proudly signed this bill as vice president and handed it over to President Biden."
Following her remarks, President Biden told Vice President Harris, "You are going to be an amazing president," and announced, "We will unveil measures to reduce excessively high drug prices."
President Biden announced that under the IRA, prices for 10 prescription drugs covered by Medicare have been reduced. With drug prices cut by up to 79%, Medicare beneficiaries are expected to save $1.5 billion (approximately 2.04 trillion KRW) in out-of-pocket prescription drug costs in the first year of implementation in 2026.
President Biden took aim at the Republican Party and former presidential candidate Donald Trump. He criticized the GOP, saying, "Not a single Republican member of the House of Representatives supported the IRA." He also mocked Trump, saying, "The person we are competing against, what was his name again? Donald Dump or something like that."
Regarding his future term, Biden emphasized, "Over the next three months, I will ensure that no senior in America spends more than $2,000 a year on prescription drugs," adding, "I will accomplish this and then step down."
He also made a joke about the risks of aging. President Biden said, "I have served in the Senate for 270 years. I know I look about forty, but I am a bit older," adding, "When I was first elected to the Senate at 29, people said I was too young, and now they say I am too old."
The NYT analyzed that as Vice President Harris and former President Trump engage in a fierce contest, Medicare drug price negotiations are particularly important in winning the votes of senior citizens. Since being selected as the Democratic presidential candidate, Vice President Harris has caught up with Trump in polls and is competing with a narrow lead within the margin of error.
A poll released on the same day by the Pew Research Center, which surveyed 9,021 U.S. adults from the 5th to the 11th, showed that 46% of registered voters said they would vote for Vice President Harris if the election were held that day. Support for former President Trump stood at 45%, indicating a tight race. In the same poll last month, Trump had 44% support while President Biden had 40%, with the Democrats trailing by 4 percentage points.
