Russia has declared a federal state of emergency in Belgorod, a southwestern border region adjacent to Ukraine. Belgorod Oblast is located next to Kursk, where Ukrainian forces carried out a surprise attack on Russian mainland territory.
According to Sputnik News and other sources, the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations announced on the 15th (local time) that the security situation in the Belgorod region has been recognized as a federal state of emergency.
Alexander Kurenkov, Minister of Emergency Situations, explained, "The situation in the Belgorod region remains complex and urgent," adding, "Residential areas and infrastructure have been damaged due to terrorist attacks by Ukrainian armed groups, resulting in casualties."
Belgorod Oblast had declared a state of emergency at the regional government level the previous day. Vyacheslav Gladkov, governor of the oblast, requested the government commission to declare a federal state of emergency while announcing the regional emergency.
As Ukrainian forces launched a surprise attack on Kursk on the 6th and continued their advance, airstrikes using drones and other means have been repeatedly carried out in the neighboring Belgorod region. Belgorod Oblast began evacuating residents starting from the 12th.
Vyacheslav Gladkov, governor of Belgorod Oblast, stated, "We will inform residents as soon as possible about the meaning of the federal state of emergency declaration and the actions required."
