Mixed Reactions from Ruling and Opposition Parties to President Yoon's Congratulatory Speech
People Power Party: "A New Vision for Unification Strategy"
On the 15th, the ruling and opposition parties gave mixed evaluations of President Yoon Suk-yeol's Liberation Day commemorative speech.
The ruling People Power Party praised President Yoon for presenting a concrete and new strategy for unification. On the other hand, opposition parties such as the Democratic Party criticized it as a 'rallying tool for far-right forces.'
Han Ji-a, chief spokesperson for the People Power Party, said in a statement, "President Yoon today presented a new vision toward a unified Korea enjoying 'greater freedom and opportunities' and a unification strategy based on 'our people's values of freedom, changes among North Korean residents, and international solidarity,'" highly evaluating the so-called '8.15 Unification Doctrine' plan.
She added, "The People Power Party and the Yoon Suk-yeol administration will do their best in a vigorous journey to bring forward a unified Korea of freedom, peace, and prosperity."
In contrast, No Jong-myeon, floor spokesperson for the Democratic Party, met with reporters at the National Assembly and criticized, "This is the worst Liberation Day commemorative speech that is not even worth commenting on," adding, "It looks like nothing more than a rallying tool for a handful of far-right forces."
Cho Guk, leader of the Cho Guk Innovation Party, held a press conference and claimed, "At this point, President Yoon is not just a host for New Right and pro-Japanese collaborators but the main body."
