Changwon Special City Holds the 79th Liberation Day Commemoration Changwon Great Bell Ringing Ceremony.
This bell-ringing event was organized to remember the overwhelming moment of shouting for liberation from the harsh oppression of Japanese colonial rule, and to reaffirm the determination never to repeat the painful history of losing the nation. The event was attended by more than 200 people, including Changwon Special City Mayor Hong Nam-pyo, Changwon City Council Chairman Son Tae-hwa, Gyeongnam Eastern Veterans Affairs Office Director Cho Kyung-chul, Changwon Liberation Association President Kim Dong-chul, and over 30 descendants of independence patriots.
This year, 11 descendants of independence patriots recommended by the Liberation Association, 10 members of veterans' organizations, and 8 citizens selected through a public contest were chosen as bell ringers.
The bell was rung a total of 33 times, with 11 groups of 4 people each ringing the bell three times per group. Participants also sang the 'Liberation Day Song' together to reflect on the meaning of liberation.
Mayor Hong Nam-pyo of Changwon Special City said, "Let us never forget that the peace and prosperity we enjoy today are precious gifts achieved through the blood and sweat of our patriotic forebears and independence activists. I hope the sound of the bell ringing at Changwon Daejonggak will allow us to feel the joy of freedom and peace, and will be a great force in helping Changwon Special City become a central city in Northeast Asia."
