The Ministry of Economy and Finance announced the day before that it has appointed Kang Young-gyu (55), Director of the Public Policy Bureau, as its spokesperson.
The newly appointed spokesperson Kang is a bureaucrat well-versed in budgeting and finance. After graduating from Yonsei University with a degree in Business Administration, he entered public service by passing the 39th Administrative Examination.
He served at the Korea Customs Service and the Ministry of Planning and Budget, and held positions such as Director of Budget Management, Director of Employment Environment Budget, and Director of Agriculture, Forestry and Maritime Budget at the Ministry of Economy and Finance's Budget Office.
He also built expertise in the fiscal sector by serving as Director of Fiscal Strategy and Fiscal Soundness Review Officer.
In particular, while working as the Fiscal Soundness Review Officer, he was responsible for managing indicators to establish the Yoon Seok-yeol administration's 'sound fiscal policy' stance.
He led the legislation on fiscal rules to manage the managed fiscal balance deficit within 3% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and actively persuaded opposition parties.
Since August last year, he has served as Director of the Public Policy Bureau, devising improvement plans for public institutions' citizen-centered services. These included expanding palace exploration programs and allowing online submission of college entrance exam applications, among various other policies closely related to daily life.
He is also skilled in communication with staff and was voted the most desirable boss to emulate at the Ministry of Economy and Finance last year. The spokesperson position at the Ministry of Economy and Finance is at the director level (Grade 1), and Kang will be promoted with this appointment.
