Sharing Status of India's Space Development... Workshop on Earth Observation Satellites

The National Academy of Engineering Holds the 7th Korea-India Workshop
Discussion on 'Current Status and Cooperation Plans for Earth Observation Satellites'

A forum for discussing the current status and policies related to India's Earth observation satellites has been established. India is a leading country in satellite technology, having successfully launched the meteorological satellite 'INSAT-3DS' into geostationary orbit last February.

Sharing Status of India's Space Development... Workshop on Earth Observation Satellites

On the 14th, the National Academy of Engineering of Korea announced that it will hold an online workshop titled "Current Status and Cooperation Plans for Earth Observation Satellites" with the Indian National Academy of Engineering on the 19th and 20th. The event will be broadcast live on YouTube.

The workshop, now in its seventh year, will feature aerospace experts. Professor Yeo Jae-ik from the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Seoul National University, Lee Chang-jin, a specialist at the Korea Aerospace Technology Institute, B.N. Suresh, a research fellow at the Indian Space Research Organisation, and R.I. Sujith, a professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, will serve as session chairs. A total of 12 experts will participate as presenters.

The first day's session will focus on "Development of Core Technologies to Promote the Use of Satellite Imagery." Shailesh Nayak, a scientist and former Minister of Earth Sciences in India and Director of the National Institute of Advanced Studies, will deliver the keynote speech. He will explain how satellite data supports disaster management, resource management, and environmental protection, as well as the benefits Earth observation technology provides to humanity. Lee Joo-jin, former chairman of the Council of Former Research Institute Directors, will present on the global status of satellite development and climate monitoring.

Jeon Tae-gyun, CEO of SI Analytics, will present on "Exploring Joint Satellite Application Areas between Korea and India," Nilesh Desai, a research fellow at the Satellite Applications Centre of the Indian Space Research Organisation, will discuss "Current Status and Cooperation Plans for Earth Observation Satellites," and Park Young-je, Chief Research Officer at Telepix, will talk about "Solving Marine Issues Using High-Resolution Optical Images."

The second day's session will be held under the theme "Policies for Access and Utilization of Satellite Imagery in the Private Sector and Usage Cases in Various Fields." Oh Il-seok, Vice President of the Korean Association for Space Security, will present on "Laws and Policies for Utilizing Satellite Data and Imagery in Korea," Shri Vinod Kumar, Director of IN-SPACE, will discuss "Implementing Reforms in the Indian Space Sector," and Chae Tae-byeong, Head of the Satellite Utilization Center at the Korea Aerospace Research Institute, will present on "Korea's Satellite Data Distribution Policies and Utilization."

The National Academy of Engineering expects the workshop to strengthen satellite technology cooperation between the two countries and to serve as a platform for exploring ways to utilize satellite imagery across various fields.

Kim Ki-nam, President of the National Academy of Engineering, said, "With recent increases in defense and trade cooperation between the two countries and Korean companies investing in India, collaboration in the aerospace sector is also anticipated. We hope this workshop will provide an opportunity for both countries to discuss satellite technology development and applications and become a stepping stone for aerospace projects in both nations."
